FISHERS OF MEN
Matthew 4:19
An individual may be a teacher, an apostle, a pastor, a layman, a doctor, an evangelist, etc., but if he or she is not in reality seeking and attempting to bring other people to Christ, then that individual is not fulfilling the work God has ordained for His people, namely, to be “fishers of men.”
Charles Spurgeon stated, “Conversion is most fully displayed
when it leads converts to seek the conversion of others. We most truly follow
Christ when we become “fishers of men.”
How can this be done in our day and age, when society, for the most part, seems to be determined on doing things its own way?
1- Something to be done by us: “Follow Me…”
a. We
must be separated to Him in order to pursue His object [Matthew
We must cling to one and only one master.
b. We must abide with Him so we may catch His spirit.
c. We must obey Him so we may learn His method: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.” Matthew 11:29
d. We must believe Him in all things that we believe true doctrine.
e. We must copy His life that we may win His blessing from God. We cannot afford to be or to look like the world in our words and actions, but must mirror Christ.
2- Something to be done by Him: “…I will make you”
a. By our following Christ, He works conviction and conversion in people. He uses our example as a means to an end.
b. By our discipleship, the Lord makes us fit to be used.
c. By our personal experience in following Him, He instructs us in the holy art of soul winning.
d. By inward direction, He guides us what, when, where, and how to speak
e. By His Spirit, He qualifies us to reach people.
f. By His secret working on individual’s hearts, He helps and speeds us in our work.
Jesus is the one instructing us by His example to become “fishers of men.”
A fisher is dependent, trustful, diligent, persevering, intelligent, watchful, self-denying, daring, and successful.
Time is short, let us each one indeed follow Christ and be
genuine “fishers.”
